Governor Rochas Okorocha has cautioned political leaders in the country to shun divisive actions and utterances that are capable of threatening the peace and unity of the country, stating that the greatest threats to the nation’s unity are the political leaders who talk and act in manners that pose serious threat to the country’s oneness.

The governor made this submission at the Convocation ceremony of the Imo State University Owerri (IMSU) for the conferment of Higher Degrees and Honorary Doctorate Degrees to deserving Nigerians, at the University’s convocation arena.

He stressed that the ordinary citizens of the country have no problem living together as one people, regretting that it is political leaders who always engage in inciting actions and utterances.

The governor said, it was the high premium the state government and the authorities of the Imo state University place on the unity of the country that made the Institution to decide to honour the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sanni Bello with Doctor of Business Administration Degree (Honoris Causa).

Okorocha further remarked, “the coming of the Niger State Governor here today for this Honorary Doctorate Degree is a dramatization of the unity of the country. The governor came all the way from Niger state to Imo state with all his entourage. This means that there is now a good working relationship between his state, Niger and Imo state. I think we can build the Nigeria of our collective dreams and aspiration.”

On the number of graduands, Governor Okorocha remarked “The last Convocation of the University was in 2008 and today the number of Masters and Ph.D graduands especially 357 Ph.D graduands is the highest in the country. This goes a long way to justify the claim that our main industry is education. We remain number one in education in the country and no one can take that away from us. The free education programme is the main policy thrust of the administration in the state.”

Stressing that, “a young man who made the overall best result of a grade point of 4.78 in Optometry could have dropped from school like he said while receiving the award if not the free education programme because his father died short after his matriculation, and at a point, he thought of dropping out of school, only to be greeted with the good news of free education. Today he is a First Class graduate.”

He also noted that the difference between America and Nigeria is in the quality of their human capital. If our human capital is developed we shall sing the same song of the Americans. Therefore, I want to urge the universities to begin to think of courses that will tailor towards the development of the resources of our land.

Niger state Governor, Alhaji Bello in his speech after the award of Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration, collaborated Governor Okorocha’s remark on the unity of the country and said, Nigeria of all tribes must unite for the greatness of the country, adding that it was against the backdrop of his vested interest in the unity of the country that he accepted to be honoured by the Imo State University.

Governor Bello thanked the University Community for finding him worthy to be honoured with Honorary Doctorate Degree, assuring that he would do his best towards the development of the University, and also commended the free education programme of the Imo state government.
