An unreserved apology has been demanded from Sahara Reporter, an online medium by the the Ilorin Emirate Students Union, National Headquarters, yesterday, for a defamatory story published against the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari.
The students union said if the medium failed to apologize, the national body of Ilorin Emirate should not hesitate to take legal action against the Sahara Reporters.
Sahara Reporters had published an online article where it allegedly referred to the Emir of Ilorin as “houseboy” of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki.
The students union which spoke during a peaceful protest in Ilorin yesterday, described the publication as derogatory and insulting on the personality of the emir.
The national president of the union, Salman Sheu Abdulkadir said there was nothing bad when the Emir was being sympathetic to any of his sons who is facing one challenge or the other.
He said when the emir was playing his fatherly role on any of his people, that could not warrant insult on him.
He said “Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki is a real son of the emirate, if he can aspire for anything at the national level, I don’t see anything wrong for any leader or traditional ruler to give him support or pray for him in order to achieve his ambition. So, how could that warrant insult and derogatory statement from the media?.
He described the publication as unlawful, unacceptable and uncalled for, adding that “we cannot allow uncultured people like Sahara Reporters to use that statement on our emir”.
“We, Ilorin Emigrate students are not in support of that news and insult on our Emir and we demand public apology and removal of the story from its site with immediate effect”.
