A discount card was on Monday launched by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara. This card is aimed at subsidizing expenses for students of tertiary institutions and serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

This card was initiated by a former member of the House of Representatives and chairman of ‘The Bridge Concept Nigeria Ltd’ Hon. Bimbo Daramola, The Speaker siad, while unveiling the discount card in Abuja disclosed that the platform is targeting about 23 million Nigerian youths.

Dogara, who, who was represented by the Chief Whip of the House, Hon Al-hassan Ado Doguwa, said the discount card, which is an initiative of a private firm, “The Bridge Concept”, will go a long way in helping the challenges faced by students and Youth Corps members particularly with the prevailing economic hardship in the country.

He said: “This initiative is about to give adequate attention to what we have been talking about; that is the welfare of students and Youth Corps members, without taking action. If we keep talking about it without taking action, then it is mere lip service.”

In his remarks, the initiator and Chairman of ‘The Bridge Concept Nigeria Ltd’ Hon Daramola, said the concept has already received endorsement of the Committee of Vice Chancellors and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

Daramola said the bearers of the card would receive different ranges of discounts on the purchase of goods and services, from over 500 corporate partners, ranging from transportation, entertainment, hospitality to tourism among others.

According to him; “The effect of our current economic realities on our youths is harsh, so it is our responsibility to look for safety nets to shield them from crimes and criminality. While doing that, we should not lose focus on how to empower the students and Youth Corps members to keep from deviant behaviours. That was what brought the idea of this online discount platform.

“We already have partners from all sectors of the economy. We have over 500 partners as am talking to you right now and more are still willing to partner with us.

“Though it is new and first of its kind in Nigeria, it has been in existence in Europe and Americas for more than three decades. This discount card can be used by all students in tertiary institutions; including Master’s and PhD.”

Also speaking, the Director General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi, who was represented by the Director of Special Duties at the NYSC headquarters, Mr. Yakubu Jok, urged corp members not to abuse the opportunity, especially by travelling unnecessarily because of the discounts on transport
