UNIPORT To Host West Africa University Games By November

West Africa University Games, (WAUG), the Olympics Games of West Africa students, is the biggest and most competitive games among West African students.

“Hosting the best student athletes from West Africa demands meticulous planning and painstaking execution to pull off a memorable competition that should further confirm our (University of Port Harcourt) standing as the undisputed masters of sports on the West African coast,” Mr. Lale, a professor, said.

According to Premium Times, The Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Ndowa Lale, while inaugurating the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the 2016 edition of the West Africa University Games (WAUG), which the institution will host in November.

He said “We do not just intend to win. It is important that we put up a gold standard that future hosts would strive to meet.”

The chairman of the LOC is deputy vice chancellor, Anthony Ibe, while the vice chairman is Okey Onuchukwu.

Dorcas Otto, the institution’s registrar and Vitalis Aliezi, bursar, will serve as members of the LOC. The Rivers State government representative on the LOC is Douglas Dube.

The vice chancellor will head the finance and fund-rising subcommittee, and will be assisted by Ann Nwagwu, a banker, and Olukayode Thomas, the games marketing and promotion consultant.

Matilda Nnodim will head the Ceremonial and Protocol Subcommittee, while Otu Ekpeyong will head the Accommodation Subcommittee.

Williams Wodi is to head of Media, Publicity and Documentation Subcommittee, while Reginald Isiguzo will head Security Subcommittee.

Chinwe Ezirim, Osi Akpoghome, Matthew Wegwu, Regina Ogali and Athan Amasiatu will head Medical, Transport, Team UNIPORT Preparation and WAUG Forum Subcommittees respectively.

Speaking after the inauguration, the university’s head of sports, Ken Anuwegje, urged members of the committee to work hard towards organizing the greatest WAUG event ever, Premium Time reported.
