Abdullahi Usman, the Chief Executive Officer of Usmaniyya Global Agency Limited, an educational consulting firm, says in an interview that the company has obtained government permit to set up a private polytechnic in Kano that will offer diplomas in health sciences and medical technology courses.
Over the last twenty years or more, Nigerian students seeking admissions in universities abroad rely on agencies like yours. But there were allegations that most of these students ended up in unaccredited universities.
The agency was registered on July 17, 2007. We are into educational consultancy and help parents, students, governments and organizations with educational planning as well as facilitate best educational opportunities abroad. We also do medical consultancy by rendering support to patients who want to access medical care abroad. We assist them to get best medical treatments in the best hospitals across the globe. We organize conferences. If you want to attend a conference we link you up with the organizers and provide all the necessary documents to attend your conference smoothly.
The allegation was baseless and rather politically motivated to tarnish our image. I think they made this allegation due to our relationship with some Chinese universities. I want to make it categorically clear that all the universities that we are dealing with in China are public universities. All these universities, the least among them is 65 years old. All of the universities are from 70 to 90 years old. They are world class institutions that have built their reputations on intrinsic quality. Therefore, people are making the charge due to the progress we are making in our business. In China alone we have about 500 students studying in different universities. That is why I have been telling parents to go to the ministry of education in Abuja and buy reference books that contain the list of accredited universities in the world. For example, there is a book by the International Association of World Universities and another made by the European Universities. There is another book that contains all the names of approved American universities. There is yet another book that contains the list of all the United Kingdom universities. The book of International Association of World Universities is in three volumes and costs not less than N500. If you study abroad and come back to Nigeria, the ministry of education will refer you to the books and if the name of your university is not included in them, then the university is not accredited and recognized in the world. I want people to understand that more than 200 universities that teach in English in China are approved by the government. In China, you can’t operate a university and start teaching in English language without getting approval from the government. Another thing is that if the university you want to study in is not among the approved universities, the Chinese government will not give you resident permit. Without resident permit you can’t get visa.
Why do you concentrate more on public universities?
It depends on the country. China is a communist country, they operate mainly public universities. There are other countries such as US where we deal with private universities. I concentrate more on public universities in China because their tuition fee is affordable. If you want to read medicine in China you will spend not less than US$ 6,000 to 7, 000 annually, equivalent to a little over N2 million on official exchange rate. This includes accommodation, medical insurance, and tuition fee excluding feeding allowance. If it is other courses like mechanical engineering and aeronautical engineering, the tuition fee is about $3,500 with accommodation. So, if you have from N1.3 million you can travel to China and study. It is cheaper and affordable.
We work with many institutions in the USA, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, China, Egypt, Sudan, India, UK, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Cyprus, Russia, Poland and Ghana. In USA, we represent Ferris State University. In Turkey we work with five universities like Istanbul Kultur University, Sabancı University, Yaşar University, Okan University and University of Turkish Aeronautical Association. In China we have agreement with about nine universities and in Bangladesh we have two universities. In Cyprus we have four universities; Egypt, five universities and Switzerland, one university. In Ghana we represent three universities; India, five universities; Malaysia, five universities; Poland, one university; Philippines, two universities while in Russia we recruit students for two universities. In Sudan we have four; Uganda, two universities and United Arab Emirate, four universities. I thanked God that I have good relationship with about 1,000 universities in the world and I have a lot of students who graduated from there. I have some of my students working in Kano, Jigawa, Katsina and other states.
Your agency recently obtained government approval to set up a private polytechnic in Kano, how far have you gone in terms of preparation?
We went to the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) office in Kaduna and presented our request for license for a private polytechnic. We demonstrated our eligibility and they gave us their requirements. We thanked God that we have fulfilled the entire requirements. We got provisional permit for the institution; we are now waiting for the final approval to commence lectures. As I am talking to you, we have obtained a land in Bunkure Local Government and we are waiting for certificate of occupancy to commence work on setting up safe and high quality facilities. We shall follow due process because we have no personal relationship with the authorities. We got the approval on merit. We have our temporary site. I want to assure you that our school will commence operation next year. Our temporary site is located in Kano city. We have 15 apartments and enough facilities and teachers to start.
The school will offer diplomas in medical and health technology courses including public health, community health, medical laboratory science, nursing, physiotherapy and pharmacy technician certification.
I have confidence that our school will be the best health institution not only in Kano but in the country. We have many years of cognate experience on this issue. We have good relationship with the best universities abroad. Fifty percent of our lecturers will come from abroad. We will have the best lecturers. We will get our facilities from overseas. Therefore our experience as educational consultancy firm will give us an edge over our peers.
Our future plan is to open a medical university. We want to set an example in this country. I have some of my students that are lecturing in various universities here in Nigeria. They promise to partner with us and achieve the desired goal.
